What is a Reiki attunement and is it important?

Traditionally, Reiki attunements are the part of a Reiki Training in which your healing channel is opened. Students sit in a circle and are guided through an energetic process where a trained Reiki Master Teacher gently opens your energy field and activates your natural ability to channel healing energy. One person is attuned at a time, a process that takes about 5-10 minutes each. Our Reiki channel is a channel that is already there, as we all have the natural ability to channel healing energy. However, the process of attuning someone is similar to tuning a channel on the radio to a clearer signal.

Each level of Reiki has an attunement. Level I: first degree, Level II: second degree, and Level III: third degree. Each one expands your healing capacities more, and students often report feeling a noticeable difference in how much energy is flowing through their hands after each attunement.

Some Reiki Master Teachers only offer 1:1 trainings, and thus only private attunements, and some offer distance attunements that are done virtually. Is it possible to receive an attunement over the phone? Absolutely. Supernatural energy does not hold to space or time, similar to how you don't need to be with someone in order to effectively pray for them. However, there is a special kind of magic that happens in person, and in group settings. While private attunements carry their own benefits of being very personal, energy is undeniably amplified by collective intention.

This is the reason why I love small group trainings and attunements. Over the last 10 years of leading trainings, I have found there is a sweet spot: 6 students. Every once in a while the universe decides that one of my immersions will have a smaller group or slightly larger, but when it is an intimate small group, there is space for it to feel personal while still captivating on the power of group energy. In my trainings, you aren't just a "certificate" coming in and out. You are seen, you are held, and you are a very important part of the group that the angels have intentionally brought together.

And so to me, Reiki attunements are not just a formality.

They are the most sacred part of a Reiki Training — and in my opinion, the most important part. It is the moment you are accepting the Holy Spirit into your mind & heart. It is a sacred initiation that says: I am open, ready, and willing to receive Divine Presence into my life in a new way.

Ever since I had a profound spiritual experience where Jesus unexpectedly came to me in a Reiki session a few years ago, I no longer do attunements the “traditional” way. I now understand that he is the original healer, and taught me so much about hands-on healing. He taught me how to go beyond just channeling life force energy, and how to partner with the Holy Spirit — the higher consciousness behind "life force energy".

So an attunement isn’t just a moment when your channel is opened, it’s the moment you receive a gift: A healer. A guide. A counselor. A supernatural best friend who you have now chosen to partner with in life.

The Holy Spirit isn’t just an "energy" — the Holy Spirit is a higher intelligence and conscious presence available to you, that has the capacity to enter into your mind and heart in a life altering way, if you choose to open the door. The way I facilitate an attunement is with this in mind: we are not the ones doing the healing, we are receiving it.

And then, everything will begin to shift. A single moment, that initiates complete life realignment. Those patterns you have been trying to break in your own strength? Broken. Those medical conditions you haven’t found the cure for? Cured. Those relationships in your life that you’ve known needed to end? Closed.

Wherever you’ve been stuck, starts to move. Wherever you've felt lost, starts to become clear. And the more you embrace it, the more you will find yourself living a completely different life, and often within a surprisingly short period of time.

Of course we can’t place expectations on it; not everything heals overnight, and there is a higher intelligence to the way and timeline in which someone heals. Integration is also just as important as the initiation, which is why I offer monthly guided self reiki sessions as a space to receive ongoing mentorship, support, and community. I have seen it time and time again. The more you immerse, the more magical it becomes.

So when the time for attunements arrives in my Reiki Training, I meet it was the utmost respect and reverence. I hold each student the way Spirit guides me to, I speak the words I am told to speak, and each attunement looks slightly different. Some experience an overwhelming presence of unconditional love and are greeted by their angels and God. Some have a more subtle experience in the moment, but the initiation happened on a deeper level and I know without a shadow of a doubt that their life is about to change.

The way I do attunements now feels SO different. It is ceremonial, personal, and deeply connective — every student participates in each other's attunement. I’ve had many come through my training who have been attuned in other trainings before and also share that what they felt was nothing like what they experienced before.

All attunements have the capacity to be magical. God is God, no matter which training you take. And, I have noticed there is a depth available when you call in the Holy Spirit specifically, and not just life force energy. There is a palpable difference in presence. It is a life altering moment, and whether it feels subtle or strong does not dictate the depth of what just occurred on a spiritual level.

And so if this stirred something inside of you, know that is Spirit nudging you. That feeling isn't random. Not everyone will read this and feel curious or drawn to it.
